Project: Create Visual Material for a Lesson Area

Reading time: approximately 7 minutes

Congratulations! You have now gone through all the theory moments in the course, from basic prompting and stylistic control to ethics and tool comparisons. This final moment is about putting all this knowledge into practice. The goal is for you to plan and create a coherent and useful visual material for a subject area that is relevant to your teaching.

1. Project Goal: Creating a Visual Thread

The purpose of this project is not to create a single, random image, but a coherent series of 3-5 images that together can support a lesson or an entire theme area. By creating a series, you show that you can control both content and style consistently, which is the key to producing professional lesson material.

2. Step by Step: Your Project Plan

Use this checklist to structure your work.

Step 1: Choose Subject and Purpose

  • Subject Area: What will you illustrate? Be as specific as possible (for example, "The Water Cycle", "Causes of the French Revolution", "Sub-processes of Photosynthesis").
  • Pedagogical Purpose: What is the goal of the image series? Should it introduce a subject, explain a complex process, or show examples? Define the purpose for each individual image in your series.
    • Example: Image 1: An atmospheric overview image. Image 2: A detailed diagram of a process. Image 3: A concrete example of application.

Step 2: Choose Tool and Style

  • Tool Choice: Based on what you learned in Moment 7, which tool is best suited for your purpose? Justify your choice.
    • Example: "I choose DALL-E 3 because I need to create diagrams with correct text." or "I choose Midjourney because I want a more artistic, cinematic feel in the images."
  • Define Your Style: This is crucial for creating a thread. Decide on a consistent style that you use in all your prompts. Write down your style modifiers.
    • Example: , in the style of a technical drawing from the 1900s, blueprint, white background or , minimalist infographic, flat colors, clear outlines.

Step 3: Create and Iterate the Images

  • Write Your Prompts: Formulate a basic prompt for each image in your series. Do not forget to include your chosen style modifiers in each prompt.
  • Generate and Refine: Create the images and evaluate the results. Use the techniques from Moment 5 (Iteration and Inpainting) to adjust details, correct errors and improve the composition until you are satisfied.

Step 4: Ethical and Factual Review

  • Fact-check: Check each image carefully. Are all the facts in the diagram correct? Is the historical clothing correct? Are the biological details right? Remember: you are the final guarantor of the content.
  • Ethical Review: Reflect on the representation of the images. Do they reinforce any unwanted stereotypes? Are they inclusive? Adjust as needed to ensure responsible and representative material.

3. Example of a Completed Project

  • Subject Area: History, The Industrial Revolution in England.
  • Purpose: Create three images: 1) An overview image of an early industrial city. 2) A close-up of a steam engine. 3) A social realist image of working-class families' living conditions.
  • Tool & Style: Midjourney. Style modifier: , in the style of a sepia-toned photograph from the late 1800s, realistic, grainy texture.
  • Example Prompt (Image 1): A panoramic view of Manchester, England, around the year 1850. Many tall factory chimneys release dark smoke against a gray, overcast sky. Below lie densely packed brick houses and dirty streets, in the style of a sepia-toned photograph from the late 1800s, realistic, grainy texture.
  • Review: "I checked that the architecture and the appearance of the chimneys match the period. I was careful to prompt for a scene with both men, women and children to give a fairer picture of the workforce."

The Course is Complete!

Congratulations! You now have not only the theoretical knowledge but also practical experience of creating high-quality visual material using AI.

The way forward is to continue experimenting. Share your creations and experiences with colleagues, and be curious about new tools and techniques that are constantly evolving. Remember that AI is a powerful assistant, but it is your pedagogical expertise and critical judgment that transform the technology into a meaningful and effective tool for teaching.
